Dr. Kerry Bishop

I was born and raised on a farm near Jansen Saskatchewan and completed my high school education at Lanigan Central High. From there I attended University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomy. I continued to pursue optometry and moved down to Bloomington Indiana where I completed my optometry degree at Indiana University. I attended several externships including a Veterans hospital in New York, Laservue lasik site in Orlando, Quantico marine base in Virginia, and a pediatrics/ low vision clinic in Indianapolis.  After completion of these I worked in Colorado for one year before returning home to Saskatchewan. After working at the Regina Eye Health Center for 2 years I was offered the exciting opportunity to join Atrium Optometric Group in 2004. Atrium’s commitment to having state of the art equipment, well-educated staff and implementing the newest technology and products allows me to provide high quality vision care to all my patients.

I enjoy practicing full scope family optometry with a special interest in children, contact lenses, and prevention of eye disease.  I am currently on committees for providing continuing education to Saskatchewan optometrists and low vision.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my husband Brandon and our family and friends. My hobbies include soccer, fishing, figure-skating, golfing and traveling.

I grew up in Calgary and attended Queen Elizabeth High School but moved to Henry Wise Wood from where I graduated in 1970. I went on the University of Calgary and majored in Zoology. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the University of Waterloo School of Optometry after 2 years of undergraduate university. I graduated from the U of W in 1976 and entered private optometric practice with Dr. Austin Forsyth and Dr. Brent Beaton in Saskatoon.

My early years in practice were spent building a practice with a special interest in contact lenses and children's vision and its impact on learning. I spent several years on the Advisory Board of the Saskatchewan Association for children with Learning Disabilities and continue to have a keen interest in the area.

I was also interested in service to my profession and was elected to the Council of the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists in 1979. I served on council for 10 years and held every office available including President in 1976/76. During this time we rewrote the entire Saskatchewan Optometry Act.

I took a couple years away from the political scene but was wooed back to action as the Saskatchewan delegate to Canadian Association of Optometrists in 1990. I again went through every office available and in 1995/96 was the President of the Canadian Association of Optometrists. This was an incredible time in my life as I tried to balance the responsibilities of the national association with my practice and family responsibilities. I traveled over 100 days the first year and continued to work a nearly full schedule at home. Fortunately my children were able to travel with me some of the time and we saw much of Canada and made friends across the country during that time. I was a driving force behind the creation of a body called the Eye Health Council of Canada. It is a strategic alliance between optometry and industry and exists to promote eye health awareness to Canadians and can be seen bringing its messages to the public in most medias on a regular basis.

Since retiring from national optometric politics in 1997 I have regained my form on the golf course which continues to be my passion. I have been on many advisory boards and currently am involved in clinical research with a number of new silicone hydrogel contact lenses. This allows me to keep up to date on contact lens research and gives us access to new products long before they are ready for mass marketing. They also allow me to continue to travel and to maintain the relationships with people in our industries that I established during my years with the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

My children continue to do great. David working at Point2 Technologies in Saskatoon and is responsible for this web page. He took a year off and went to school in Germany right after high school an experience that will have a lasting impact on his life. Julia graduated with her education degree and is teaching grade 2 French Immersion at Victoria School. . She continues to skate at a very high level and is an awesome singer.

Anita and I were married in July 2003 and we enjoy golfing and traveling together.

I was born and raised in Estevan, Saskatchewan. My optometry degree was received at Waterloo, Ontario in 1985, after which I returned to my home province to build a practice. In 1986 I was fortunate enough to join the Atrium Optometric Group and have seen many exciting changes and growth since that time. We have 28 people employed who excel at their jobs and make for a very comfortable and efficient place to work.

I enjoy practicing full scope optometry, but have a special interest in children's vision and contact lenses.

Outside of my work day, my hobbies include biking, hiking, playing piano and singing. Most of my time however, is spent with my three sons - Reid, Devin and Jesse and my husband Dave. Never a dull moment!

I was born and raised in Weyburn, SK, graduating from high school in 1980. I attended the Saskatchewan Technical Institute, receiving a diploma in business administration in 1982 which led to a 5 year career in the banking industry. In 1987 I returned to university in pursuit of a career in Optometry and received my degree from the University of Waterloo in 1992. Following graduation I split my time between private practice in Brampton, Ont and a position as clinical supervisor at the University of Waterloo Optometry Clinic. In 1994 I began toying with the idea of returning to the prairies and fortunately/coincidently was approached by the Atrium Optometric Group and invited to join them in Saskatoon. The decision was an easy one for me because of the great reputation enjoyed by Drs Beaton, Kerr, Lypka, Patterson and staff and I returned to join them in the fall of 1994. Since that time we have seen the opening of our second clinic in Saskatoon’s west end and the construction of our current state-of-the-art vision care facility in downtown Saskatoon, with staff that now number over 28. It has been a pleasure to be part of a team that is not only progressive and focussed, but single-mindedly committed to providing the best and most up-to-date vision care to their patients.

My practice has been built primarily on general family vision care and contact lenses, however being a father of three (my real passion - Jordan, Jessica and Joshua and wife Diane) I have developed a special interest in Children’s vision. I also enjoy a large contact lens practice and take pride in offering my patients access to the latest in lens technology and care, with great emphasis lately on Continuous wear and bifocal lenses. As well, I enjoy staying involved with our professional political scene and was recently elected to our provincial association Council.

The face of our profession is continually changing, with developments in laser and other surgical refractive procedures, expansion of our scope of practice to include the prescribing of therapeutic drugs, great advances in the technologies used in the detection and treatment of eye disease, and exciting new innovations in contact lens technology. Like most of my colleagues, I enjoy staying on the cutting edge and implementing change into my practice for the benefit of my patients.

Dr. Brent Beaton
